The Smart Artist (via Chase Jarvis)
The best thing for me to do is forget about my need for inspiration and go out and live a little more. Get uncomfortable. Live some other art. Travel. Walk the earth and get into adventures. I believe pretty strongly that this sort of thing comes from deep inside. So it requires some shake-up. Ironically, for me, getting inspired is ultimately about forgetting about looking for inspiration, because in that mode, you’re always judging. And when you’re judging, you’re not nearly as open to some inspiration that might crack you upside the head. Escape and engage.

Sometimes in our industry, our professionalism, we get [put into] silos…it should be all of our goals to break out of those silos. The more you work, the more people want to put you in a silo so they can define who you are by their terms. Our job is to never let anyone define who we are…

I’d also add:
Sometimes we put ourselves into silos - Not Good Enough, Not Smart Enough, Not Had Enough Experience. Breaking out of these silos is the hardest task in many ways, but it’s one worth pursuing every single day.
People can smell whether you love what you’re shooting or not, love what you’re pimping or not, love what you’re doing or not. So you might as well effing love it for real. It’s all you’ve got.
… the truth is, we’re way better creatives when we’re better people. Better to ourselves, better to others, better to the world.
Based on modern life expectancy numbers we each have–on average–around 30,000 days to live. I recommend doing your own math and calculating what you’ve got left.

By my back-of-a-napkin calculations I’ve got about 19,000 days left (hopefully). Better make ‘em count, then.
Been banging on about this all day across various media, but I love this video. Not just because The Chase is getting to play with shiny new Nikon kit (though that’s no bad thing) but because of the atmosphere of fun and creativity that shines through the video.
I want to do something like this. Let it be noted.
Create. Share. Sustain.
