Neural misfires from a northern brain

A sort of stream of consciousness of things I collect from t'interweb. Don't expect coherence or anything.

Be brief, concise and direct. Anyone who over-complicates things is at best insecure and at worst stupid. Children speak the most sense and they haven’t read Nietzsche.

Polly Morgan, artist (via The Guardian)

The best thing for me to do is forget about my need for inspiration and go out and live a little more. Get uncomfortable. Live some other art. Travel. Walk the earth and get into adventures. I believe pretty strongly that this sort of thing comes from deep inside. So it requires some shake-up. Ironically, for me, getting inspired is ultimately about forgetting about looking for inspiration, because in that mode, you’re always judging. And when you’re judging, you’re not nearly as open to some inspiration that might crack you upside the head. Escape and engage.

Wow. This is wonderful and haunting and weird. From BoingBoing:

This music — which sounds like a moody piano soundtrack for a existentialist movie about a rainy day — is made by slicing a tree in cross-section, sticking it on a turntable, and dropping a tone-arm with a PlayStation Eye Camera in the head, and processing its output through Ableton Live. It’s called Years, and it was created byBartholomäus Traubeck.

Which am I first, photographer or artist? If all photographic technology were to disappear from the world, I will still seek ways of expressing myself creatively, and can find happiness in other forms of art. If all human interest in art were to disappear, I will likely seek a different profession and spend the rest of my days in misery.

I’ve never been in a studio, ever, with no material and just gone in and said “Oh, I’ve got this idea.”

To go in a studio and set the amps up and just… “Yeah man, we just went in and just fuckin’ played, you know, whatever…” That’s not art. To me, that’s not art, that’s just fuckin’ about.

To me, art is writing it and re-writing it. To get from a point of playing the first chord to listening to it at the end there’s got to be some kind of emotional journey between you and the song. It can’t just be, like, fuckin’… a thousand percent inspiration. It doesn’t work like that for me.

Noel Gallagher, “It’s Never Too Late to Be What U Might Have Been - The Making of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds”

What’s interesting is that the more I shoot for myself, the more I realise that this is exactly the approach I take to get some of my favourite photos.
